Μπομπ Σφουγγαράκης (also known as Μπομπ ο Σφουγγαράκης) is the Greek dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It has previously aired on Channel 9, Alpha Cinema 1, Alpha Kids, Alpha TV, Star Channel, Alfa TV, Lumiere TV and RIK2, and it is currently airing on Nickelodeon in Greece and Cyprus.

Broadcast[]

Alfa TV[]

This was one of the many Greek dubs of Nickelodeon shows by Studio Vertical, that were commissioned by K-T.V.. The show, along with Rugrats, Clarissa Explains It All, The Journey of Allen Strange, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, The Angry Beavers, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, and Legends of the Hidden Temple, were the first shows to ever air on Alfa TV's Nickelodeon block, which replaced the K-T.V. one in December 2001.[3] It would initially air on weekdays, at 07:30, 07:55, 11:30, and 15:30, and on weekends, at 07:30 and 12:30.

Alpha Kids[]

A few months before Alpha Digital's shutdown, the first two seasons of the show would air at 07:00 and 13:30, and later at 07:30 and 13:00.[4]

Alpha TV[]

The show started airing in late 2002, alongside Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys.[5]

Channel 9[]

SpongeBob SquarePants - 2007 television advertisement (Greek)

The first season first aired in late 2003, the second season in 2004, and the third one premiered in the same year.

In September of 2007, the show would air everyday at 09:30 and 16:00 (16:30 on weekends). It was removed from the channel's schedule a few months later, in the December of the same year.

Controversy[]

During airings of SpongeBob SquarePants on Channel 9 in November of 2007, the National Council for Radio and Television started investigations regarding a claim made by one of its members, in which he says that "the show contains violent scenes for children."[6]
The reaction of audiences and fans of the show in Greece was rather negative, with people criticizing the fact that ESR was focusing on "mindless" children shows, and not on other "awful" at the time, shows on TV.
Despite the Council taking action in order to ban the cartoon, the exact reason for the cancellation of airings there till this day, are unknown.

This would make a series of events occur, including a sketch based on the controversy, on the early version of Ellinofreneia on SKAI in 2008 (followed by a complaint of an anonymous parent about it on the radio show of the same name), as well as the distribution of leaflets by "Φοιτητές σε Κρίση Ταυτότητας", criticizing accusations against gay people.

STAR Channel[]

The channel would initially secure the rights to the first six seasons of the show.[7] The new episodes of Season 4 started broadcasting in January 6, 2007.[8] Two months after the show was removed from Channel 9, Star started also airing older episodes. The made-for-television movie, "Atlantis SquarePantis", first aired on the channel in December of 2008. Season 7 premiered on September 24, 2011, after a press release about it 3 days before[9], and the final episodes to premiere were "A Friendly Game" and "Sentimental Sponge", the last episodes to ever be dubbed by Power Music Productions and Audio Visual. Before getting put off the schedule after its final airing on July 14, 2013[10] in favor of Baby Looney Tunes, selected episodes from seasons 6, 7 and 8 would air on weekends at 10:00.

Nickelodeon[]

The series began airing on Nickelodeon in Greece as soon as the channel launched on September 3, 2010, but its run was initially limited to reruns of episodes that had already aired on other channels. Season 4 first aired on January 27, 2012. Season 5 first aired on January 27, 2012. Season 6 first aired on October 22, 2012.[11][12] Season 7 first aired in December 2012.

"The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom" was supposed to premiere on October 31, 2017, as part of the SpongeBob Gold SpongeBob's Spooktacular Halloween event, but didn't air until November 15, 2017 (possibly due to the station moving to new headquarters back then, causing radical changes to the schedule for some time).

On November 18, 2019 and the next day, the first two episodes premiered at 21:30. As opposed to the initial plans, repeats of episodes from "Plankton Paranoia" to "The Ballad of Filthy Muck" and from "House Fancy" to "Slide Whistle Stooges" aired on that timeslot, before new episodes started airing again on December 9, 2019.

New episodes of season 12 started airing on September 21, 2020. The aforementioned were the first to be dubbed by Tanweer Studios (which had taken over dubbing and subtitling for Nickelodeon shows, alongside City Studios). The changes to the voice cast are minimal; SpongeBob is now voiced by Konstantinos Lagos (who previously voiced him on the third movie) and Yannis Stefopoulos reprises his role as Mr. Krabs.

Release[]

DVD[]

ODEON S.A. had released in Greece 13 DVDs with episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, from seasons 1-3 (except the 12th (with the season 6 special episode, "SpongeBob vs. The Big One") and 13th (with the season 5 special episode "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?"). Also, English and Greek audio tracks were featured, alongside Greek Subtitles. ODEON is also responsible for distributing films released by Paramount Home Entertainment, including the SpongeBob movies.

Pedio Editions (Greek: Πεδίο Εκδοτική) has manufactured collectible complete season DVDs. Seasons 1 to 4 were first released as a bonus included in the magazine Tiletheatis, seasons 5 to 8 in the newspaper Eleytheros Typos tis Kyriakis. Each season was divided into 8 discs, except seasons 7 to 9, which were divided into 9 per season. Also, the seasons 1 to 3 DVDs would eventually be re-released to mini markets, in 4-DVD packages with the price of 10 euros each one. The 9th Season 7 DVD and the 9th Season 8 one have also been released (in cooperation with The Penwest Company) on stores and more notably, supermarkets, with the regular price of 2 euros.[13][14]

VCD[]

"Party Pooper Pants" was released in June 2010 exclusively on VCD, as a bonus included with a purchase of the Greek SpongeBob magazine.

Trivia[]

  • The dubbing on the first three seasons would be recorded on a single audio channel, as opposed to later seasons.
  • At the ending credits of a SpongeBob episode from the first season, a human breath can be heard.
    • Alkis Zervos in an interview for the cartoon forum GreekToons, refers to an incident, in which one day, while having finished with the others dubbing episodes of the show after midnight, someone was heard speaking inside the dubbing chamber as the end credits were playing; the episode had to be redubbed again.
  • There is a cleaning service in Thessaloniki, Greece, that has its name given after the name of the show in Greek.[22]
  • A different dub of the theme song was introduced on the Greek premiere of "Frozen Face-Off."
  • The theme from the first movie alters the lyrics.
  • In "Best Day Ever," "Selling Out," "Dunces and Dragons," "Pest of the West," "To Love a Patty," "Have You Seen This Snail?," and "Atlantis SquarePantis," the English songs are untranslated.
  • In an airing of "Can You Spare a Dime?" on March 15, 2018 (as part of the SpongeBob Gold Heart of Gold marathon), the Greek dub can be heard on the left audio channel, and the English one on the right.
  • When the show was aired on alfa tv when the captain said are you ready kids the English audio could be heard along with the Greek audio.

    • The video color is also darker than usual.
  • In "A Friendly Game", the video color is brighter than usual.
    • This error was also seen in UK airings, however it was fixed in UK airings recently, it is unknown if the Greek dub has this error still or it has been fixed like the UK.
